Parenting a young athlete isn’t easy, and no one gets it right all the time.

Hi, I’m Lynnelle Sell, founder of Iceberg Sports Education. Like many youth sports parents, I thought being supportive meant offering tips and advice and having conversations about how to improve my kids’ performance. In reality, I was unknowingly causing a rift between my boys and me.

As a youth coach, former college athlete, and sports medicine physical therapist, I didn’t realize I was accidentally taking the joy out of my kids’ sports experience until they were in high school.

Before my middle son’s 11th-grade basketball season, the team got a new coach. He went from a 10th-grade All-Conference starter to riding the bench as a junior captain. It crushed him, and it took a toll on our whole family.

Then one night, it hit me: “My constant suggestions are making my son’s horrible season even worse.” He didn’t need my coaching; he needed my unconditional love and support.

From that moment, I backed off the advice and focused on simply being there for him.

For the first time in a long time, my son didn’t feel like he was going through it alone. It didn’t happen overnight, but we repaired our bond and are very close today.

Iceberg Sports Education partners with youth sports organizations to make a lasting impact on kids’ sports experiences.

Most adults don’t realize they need sports parent or coach education, so if it’s optional, participation is poor. Our software tracks individual’s course progress and completion.

The 3 parent courses are designed like a school curriculum. Organizational parents take ONE course per year. They are also encouraged to watch the course for coaches.

Organizations can choose from two different ways to implement The Iceberg System.

1. Start the program in all grades (3rd-8th).

2. Start the program with one grade the first year, add another grade the second year, and add the third grade the third year. For example:

Year 1: 4th grade
Year 2: 4th & 5th grades
Year 3: 4th – 6th grades
Year 4+: 4th-6th grades
