"I Don't Want My Kid to Fall Behind."
You see your child's talent. You know they have what it takes.
But when you offer encouragement or suggestions:
- They brush off your advice
- They grumble or get defensive
- They stop wanting to talk about their sport
It’s frustrating because you know you could help them improve, but you just can’t get through.
Are You Pushing Too Hard…Or Not Hard Enough?
Most parents struggle to find the right balance.
You don’t want to push your athlete too hard, and risk burnout or damaging your relationship.
But if you hold back, you worry they might not make the desired team, earn enough playing time, or reach their full potential.
The stakes are high, and getting this right can make all the difference in your athlete’s journey.
There’s an Art to Giving Them EVERY Advantage Without Sabotaging Their Experience
Do you...
-
Give post-game feedback in the car
"You played great, but maybe next time try..." -
Reward your athlete's performance
"I'll give you ten bucks IF you score a goal." -
Try to calm their pre-game jitters
"Don't be nervous, you've got this!"
-
Suggest they practice more
"Maybe we should work on your shooting tonight." -
Call out instructions during games
"Shoot!" "Get back!" "Swing level!" -
Focus your praise on their achievements
"Great game! You had 12 points and 5 rebounds."
These are the kind of well-meaning mistakes that contribute to the statistic that 70% kids quit sports by age 13 — mainly because they’re not having fun.*

I feel like I’m not a crazy parent, but I realized that I’m making a lot of mistakes, and this course helped me!!! I’m excited to use what I learned this season!

Here's What Most Parents Don't Realize
The biggest competitive edge you can give your athlete isn't more training sessions, top-notch coaching, or better gear.
It’s understandable to think these things are key to athletic success because each one improves performance.
But if more training, great coaching, and better equipment, were truly the keys to success, wouldn’t every athlete with access to them be performing at their peak? Yet, we all know hard-working, well-coached, and equipped athletes who never reach their full potential.
Here’s the reality: Without the right support at home and the right mindset, the other performance boosters fall flat.
Because it’s your words, tone, and reactions that become your athlete’s inner voice — either strengthening or sabotaging everything else you’re doing to help them succeed.
Your athlete needs a parent they can count on.
Not one they're afraid to let down.

Youth Sports Are More Competitive Than Ever
For parents and athletes, the pressure has never been more intense.
What’s fueling the stress?
-
Varsity / College Scholarship Chase:
The dream of high school or college sports creates constant pressure to make the right teams, earn lots of playing time, and post impressive stats. -
Keeping Up With The Joneses:
FOMO is real. Many parents feel they must say yes to every opportunity, leading to early specialization, year-round play, and jam-packed calendars. -
Win-At-All-Cost Mentality:
When winning is prioritized over development, less-skilled players ride the bench, and the sidelines get heated. Joy gets lost in the pressure.
When pressure outweighs joy, kids walk away.
"I Just Want You to Be My Mom. Not My Coach."
Hi, I'm Lynnelle Sell, founder of Iceberg Sports Education — and those crushing words came from my own son.
Despite being a youth coach for over 15 years, a sports medicine physical therapist, and a former college athlete, I was unknowingly making sports stressful for my kids.
I wasn’t a sideline screamer. I didn’t obsess over stats. But I cared so much about their success that I couldn’t stop offering “helpful” suggestions.
The wake-up call came during my middle son’s junior basketball season. He got a new coach and went from all-conference starter to benchwarmer.
Watching him struggle broke my heart, so I tried to help with advice, encouragement, and what I thought was support.
But to my surprise, it only made things worse. He became distant, and basketball became something we couldn’t talk about.
Our relationship was strained, right when he needed me most.
Then one night, I realized: “My constant advice-giving is making his season even harder. He doesn’t need my coaching. He just needs me to be his mom.“
So, I stopped giving suggestions and simply focused on loving him through it, being present, and supportive.
That shift changed everything. Conversations became easier. Our bond began to heal. His fun-loving personality returned.
Through this, I learned just how much the right kind of support can completely transform the youth sports experience for them…and for us.
Helping your athlete succeed should never come at the cost of your relationship.
That’s why I’ve poured countless hours of research into creating a program built on real experience. It’s taught hundreds of busy parents how to help their athletes excel without accidentally straining their relationship.
And I’m excited to share it with you…
Even Well-Meaning Words and Actions Can Cause Big Problems
Taking the fun out of sports can look like...
Unhelpful Advice
Saying “Don’t be nervous” to calm your anxious athlete’s pre-game jitters.
Rewarding Performance
Offering money or treats based on how your child played or whether the team won.
Unwanted Coaching
Coaching your kid on the car ride home, when they're tired and not in the mood to listen.
Pressure to Practice
Frequently urging or strongly encouraging your athlete to practice more.
Sideline Instructions
Shouting directions like “Shoot!”, “Swing level!” or “Get back!” during the game.
Praising Outcomes
Focusing most of your praise on your athlete's achievements - ie, goals, points, hits, etc.
These behaviors come from love, but often create pressure, strain your connection, and take the joy out of the game. But…
It Only Takes a Few Small Shifts to Make a Big Impact
Helping your athlete play their best, accelerate their development, and perform under pressure doesn’t require a complete overhaul of your sports parenting approach.
It’s often just a few simple shifts in how you show up, paired with the right tools and insights, that can elevate your athlete’s achievements, boost their enjoyment, and strengthen your connection.
The good news?
There’s a proven program that turns small changes into big results for your athlete and your relationship.
